Performance Differences of Remote Block Volume Usage in Kubernetes

Kubernetes manages various types of Persistent Volumes (PVs) for storing data. Among these, local PV is often regarded as the most performant when it comes to storage options directly attached within a node’s resources.

Local vs Remote Block Volume Performance in Kubernetes: A Comparative Overview

When dealing with remote block volumes such as Amazon EBS or SSD-based solutions, there are generally two methods of integration into your workloads:

  1. Dynamically provision and mount a PV to Pods through Container Storage Interface (CSI).
  2. Mount the volume directly on the node using local Persistent Volume technology within Kubernetes itself.

Performance Considerations between Method 1 & 2 in Depth:

  1. Direct Node Attachment: This method of mounting a remote block to physical hardware is often considered for its potential performance benefits. Data can be accessed directly by the node, potentially reducing latency and increasing read/write speeds.
  2. <li><strong>CSI Provisioned PVs in Pods</strong>: This method uses CSI to provision volumes dynamically from a remote source into pod's storage. While this is highly scalable and flexible, it may suffer minor latency issues due the network communication overhead.</li>
